Greenhouse Visit
Yesterday along with my classmates in the aquaponics guided inquiry, I went to a greenhouse where they grow mostly tomatoes. The greenhouse was really amazing, with so many intricate moving parts. Its important for them to balance heat, water, bugs, and a variety of nutrients that they provide to the tomatoes depending on time of the year/ stage of growth. The best thing about the greenhouse for me was that it was all organic with no pesticides and only helpful nutrients/bugs that keep the produce fresh. This is a double edged sword though because if any of their neighbor farms are spraying they must give notice so the greenhouse can close up to prevent the death of their tomatoes. If even one really bad bug or chemical gets in it could hurt them immensely. Overall, the system is more efficient, meaning they grow year round in a cold climate and use less water as well. I realized that this method of farming is much more scientific, and really the future of farming. Greenhouses like these can improve their community and help to keep the food supply healthy/consistent.
Here are a couple pictures from the visit:
They also have even more greenhouses under construction
